U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Issues Statement on Conditions at Glorieta Gardens Apartments

HUD Secretary Marcia L. Fudge releases the following statement on the conditions at Glorieta Gardens Apartments in Opa-locka, Florida:

“I am appalled by the status of living conditions at Glorieta Gardens Apartments. No one should have to live in unsafe conditions that threaten health and wellbeing.

“At the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), we are committed to ensuring that people living in HUD-assisted housing have safe, decent homes. The property owners responsible for the multifamily properties that receive our assistance must maintain them in accordance with our rules.

“In the case of Glorieta Gardens, HUD teams have been on site and called on the property owner to take immediate action to remediate the unacceptable conditions. At this point, the property owner has not taken all steps recommended by HUD to reasonably ensure the property is livable.

“HUD will work closely with the City of Opa-locka and Miami Dade County, Florida to support necessary next steps to ensure residents can have their units brought into compliance with local and federal standards or can find an alternative solution that meets the needs of the residents.”
